What Makes Mexikoplatz in Zehlendorf a Must-Visit in Berlin?

by | Mar 7, 2024 | Walking Tour

Would you like to discover marvelous and authentic sites to visit in Berlin while you preparing for your journey? Look no further than Mexikoplatz in the Zehlendorf district of the city. This rather secluded location is filled with historical and cultural attractions as well as excellent nature.

1. A Brief Introduction to Mexikoplatz

Mexikoplatz is one of the most stunning squares that is situated in one of the orographically safe and least troublesome districts of Zehlendorf, the southwest of the city of Berlin. It was named after a country it doesn’t indeed have any connection with – Mexico. It was only in 1959 that the square was formally commissioned to go full circle as it is today with Ghanaians and visitors alike.

2. The Historical Significance

Historically, Mexikoplatz is a very interesting place to know. It was previously known as Waldschulallee, where most important road connections existed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was renamed Mexikoplatz in honour of Mexican monarch Emperor Maximilian I after Mexicans helped to control the uprising of the people there. Some of the sources reported that Kaiser Wilhelm II had an unusual fondness for Mexico.

2.1 A Symbol of Diplomatic Relations

Mexikoplatz commemorates the history of Mexico and Germany. The square has gradually become a symbol of bilateral diplomacy provided the countries in the early years of the twentieth century. This is so because today, Mexican officials come to Mexikoplatz to honor the bilateral relations between the two countries.

3. Charming Architecture and Design

Mexikoplatz, as a name suggests, is uniquely designed with a beautiful Mexican touch and that itself makes it appealing. It is bordered with various edifices some of which have rich decorations that reflect neo classical and art nouveau architecture. Simply have a walk around the square while you try to find the specific trait in Mexikoplatz that reflects the specific architectural styles.

4. Beautiful Parks and Green Spaces

In addition to boasting great architecture, Mexikoplatz has many wonderful parks and gardens throughout the area. They will encircle the small park to which inhabitants of the square can go to refresh themselves from the noise of the cars. Under the recommendations, you will also find the nearby Düppeler Forst which is a large forest region that has possibilities for hiking, cycling etc.

4.1 The Schlachtensee Lake

Schlachtensee is another attraction prooriing the area in the nearness of Mexikoplatz. This, a short walk from the camp, is another beautiful lake with exceptionally clear water – ideal for swimming and sunbathing and for picnicking or for engaged in water-sports. Its calm and quiet nature makes it stand out from the ugly bustling city central that is congested most of the times.

5. Local Markets and Cafés

If this is your kind of thing; go for Mexican food and explore local markets, then Mexikoplatz would be for you. And the square itself is occupied by the farmers’ market which operates every week to buy not only fresh vegetables and fruits but also local specialties and handmade crafts. However, it is surrounded by a number of nice cafés and restaurants where you can taste a piece of chocolate accompanied by a cup of coffee or taste delicious German concerns.

Therefore, it was a pleasure to spend some time wandering around in the area of Mexikoplatz for those who interested in history, architecture, or just looking for a quiet and picturesque place in the working district of Berlin. It is always relaxing to have a day excursion to this marvellous square, take walks through the parks and enjoy the distinct atmosphere of Mexikoplatz area.
