Berlin is the capital of Germany and one of Europe’s most exciting destinations for tourists. When planning your visit you cannot fail to visit this great historical site known as the Brandenburg Gate. But what does such a historic site represent though? 1. The History of Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate, as known in English, or Brandenburger Tor in the German language has been a living monument for more than two hundred years. This neocclassical structure was constructed between 1788 and 1791 to honor more than sixty years of political unification and lack of war. Constructed by Carl Gotthard Langhans the gate was one of the oldest city gates of Berlin and out of strategic importance in the defense of the city.

It was used as the venue for Napoleon’s triumphal entry, the construction of the Berlin wall and its falling, and the final unification of Germany. Today it symbolises the strength of Berlin and comments on the past life of the city.

1.1 Architecture

The architectural form that is used is belonging to the Propylaea in Athens in Greece. It has in total twelve Doric columns opening five communicating portals have a cap with classical sculpture. Surmounting the gate there is the Quadriga – the chariot characterized by being four horses attached to it.

1.2 Symbolism

The Brandenburg Gate has an enormous amount of meaning to Germany and the entire world. This I guess is their national symbol of unity as the two sides of the coin represent East and West Germany before Germany was reunified. Besides, it is an embodiment of liberty, democracy, and victory of the humanity over the subjugation.

2. Famous Places of Interest in the Brandenburg Gate Region

2.1 Pariser Platz

Immediately on the side of the Brandenburg Gate is located the Pariser Platz which is a central commercial square filled with wonderful buildings. Stroll at the magnificent city Hotel Adlon Kempinski where famous personalities have once been guests at. You will enjoy a walk and be in the center of this lively square.

2.2 Unter den Linden

Walking down south of Brandenburg Gate will lead one to Unter den Linden, and Avenue which is home to prestigious buildings, Museums, and recognizable landmarks. Visit the Berlin Cathedral, Humboldt University and even the Brandenburg State opera is one of the most prestigious theaters in Germany. Before leaving the city do not forget to stop at the Bebelplatz where there is a memorial for the Nazi book burnings.

2.3 Holocaust Memorial

On a small 3 minutes’ walk from the Brandenburg Gate, one gets to see one of the most intriguing sculptures anywhere in the world which is the Holocaust Memorial. Located on an area of 19 000 sq meters, this is a serene environment presenting 2 711 concrete panels and plates in different dimensions. In its capacity to act as a memorial to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust it is a very moving piece.
